Winter gardens Cambridge Botanic and Benington Lordship

Saturday 22nd February 2020

Two highly regarded winter gardens: Benington Lordship for its spectacular display of snowdrops, and the 40-year-old winter garden at Cambridge Botanic Gardens that set the agenda for all to follow.

Benington Lordship, an estate near Stevenage, is famous for its snowdrop display. Drifts are set against a backdrop of a ruined Norman keep.   Cambridge Botanical Gardens celebrated its winter garden’s 40th year in 2019 — one of the first of its kind in the country. It’s colourful, fragrant and a full of ideas to take home.

As a bonus, former head of horticulture and garden design at Capel Manor, April Cameron, (committee member who helps run the horticulture volunteer programme for the Friends) will lead a guided tour of the shrubs and herbaceous for those who wish to join her.

As well as the winter garden there are the warm glass houses with tropical rainforests, a famous pinetum, and lots of other attractions, apart from the cafe and shop.  From 10.30am morning coffee will be available at BL who are kindly opening their cafe specially for us.

Both Benington Lordship and CBG’s facilities are fully accessible.  The gardens at CBG are mostly wheelchair/buggy accessible except for a few heritage sites and at BL all the snowdrop drifts can be viewed from the paths though the banks would be difficult to negotiate by wheelchairs and buggies.
