Meadow Areas

House sparrows are in danger of vanishing from the British landscape. Almost unnoticed their population crashed more than 60% over the past decade and half. We’re not entirely sure why, but there are a number of theories. Working with Camden Council and FoWP, the RSPB is conducting field tests to help establish the cause or causes.

Two areas of Waterlow Park have been sown with seeds. One is a typical hay meadow mix. The second plot has a grass and wildflower mix that will appeal to wildlife. The idea is to boost nature’s larder to support sparrows.

Sparrows are primarily seed eaters but for a short period after hatching, their offspring need an insect rich diet. It’s thought a paucity of insects and seeds is a major cause of their decline.

The RSPB trials will run for three years with staff and volunteers making regular visits to monitor insect and bird numbers.  It’s anticipated that the trial plots will attract and support a range of wildlife including bees, butterflies, bats and other birds such as finches.

Meanwhile, enjoy the plots and do keep an eye open for sparrows. To find out more, contact the RSPB London Office on 020 7808 1260 or london@rspb.org.uk; alternatively, contact London Borough of Camden's Nature Conservation Section on 020 7974 8816.
